By 2003 Levi's made no jeans in America at all, and in 2017 Cone Mills — the last US denim mill — closed. Japanese collectors had spent decades buying up 1940s and 50s pairs, then reverse-engineered them exactly rather than reinterpreting them. This is where genuinely American jeans are still made.
